The alternate version of “Streetwalker” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on January 4th, 2023. It was unknown this version existed.

Although fans are familiar with the two original versions from the Bad sessions, along with the leaked demo, it has been revealed that “Streetwalker” was originally written as far back as 1985 during the Bad sessions, and recorded between 1985-1987. It was worked on throughout the Forever, Bad & Captain EO Soundtrack sessions at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos. It’s believed that this was made around the same time as the original versions of Chicago, Blue Gangsta, and others due to the gangster-themed tone to several tracks. It was not considered for the Captain EO Soundtrack.

The song is rumored to have been written about a promiscuous girl who walks the streets looking for “new customers”, in which Michael finds himself in love with the promiscuous girl. It is unknown if it is inspired by a female in his life. Michael initially worked on the track by himself, then later on with Joe Kehr, who also invited Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to co-produce with him, as he was good friends with Morris Day and The Time. Shortly after writing the song, he began working further on this version around 1986 with Joe Kehr, The Rag Tag Band, Quincy Jones, and members of the English band “Tears for Fears”. Joe invited the band to the studio after meeting one of them in London.

During the Bad sessions, Joe invited the band “Tears For Fears” to the studio to contribute after meeting them in London. They were working on a song called “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” that they wanted to show to Michael. The melody from their song was interpolated into ’Streetwalker”. It’s noted that the origins of “The Way You Make Me Feel” come from this track. The extended version features a dance breakdown, which is where the concept for “The Way You Make Me Feel”’s short film was conceived - Morris Day and The Time were meant to be in the original short film, hence Morris’s voice in the full-length slow version, which is unreleased.

While they all liked this version, Quincy felt it wasn’t strong enough for the upcoming album at the time and felt the subject matter was ‘too suggestive’. Quincy was also not crazy about the lyrics essentially being about a woman who is “for the streets”. So despite Michael disliking the decision, this version was shelved into the vault. Certain elements of the song were later used for “The Way You Make Me Feel” while other elements were later used for “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears.

Michael would later on revisit the song two more times for the “Bad” album in 1987 and finish it up, but it would unfortunately not be selected for the final tracklist. So he ultimately shelved it one final time, and each version of the song was left in the vault until 2001 when the final version from the Bad sessions was released for the Special Edition of the “Bad” album, then re-released for the 25th Anniversary of said same album.
