MALAWI: SUPPORTING FARMERS IN CRISIS

In March 2023, Cyclone Freddy hit the southern region of Malawi, causing landslides, destroying entire villages, damaging infrastructure and washing away thousands of crops.

While IFAD is focused on long-term development, we also need to mitigate shocks that arise in this era of converging crises—from COVID-19, to climate change, to the war in Ukraine.

Through the Crisis Response Initiative, (CRI), IFAD in partnership with the government of Malawi, supported the Sustainable Agricultural Production Programme (SAPP) by providing additional financing that would in turn supply 100,000 households with inputs such as weather resistant seeds, fertilizers or animal production kits as well as training, received by extension workers.
