Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is an established rehabilitation modality used to stimulate the nerves that connect the spinal cord to muscles. Stimulating these nerves evokes patterned movement of the legs, which is how FES enables the muscles to perform even though a patient may have lost all or some voluntary control of the muscles. Following a devastating stroke, Britta successfully used FES as part of her outpatient therapy regime.
