The BOSS DD-500 Digital Delay is a fantastic piece of gear...but how do you use it?
This is the first in a series on delay tips and tricks, and though we will be featuring the DD 500 throughout, the concepts can be applied to other delay units, plugins and pedals as well.
Players such as Andy Timmons and Joe Satriani use a dual delay setting continuously. This video is based on Andy Timmons use of a delay with a few repeats at 375ms fed into a delay set at 500ms with only 1 repeat. Joe Satriani uses a similar concept with longer delay times, starting with one set at 400ms and then into a longer delay set at 600-650ms.
This adds a lot of depth to the playing but isn't affected by tempo, so it blends in very well across everything.
Adding an expression pedal allows the player to vary the level of the effect; perhaps swelling into single notes, boosting the effect's volume when playing sparsely and then dropping it down when playing a fast run so that the lines from the guitar are a little cleaner.
