【Knowledge Transfer for a Better World】Railways are the veins of a city, its lifeblood, transporting and connecting us to different communities and activities in a thriving metropolis. Much like the functioning of our own vascular system, the railway service is often taken for granted — we just expect it to work no matter what. In reality, it requires considerable manpower, resources and technology to maintain, just so we can enjoy timely and safe train services.

Prof. Tam Hwa-yaw, Chair Professor of Photonics from #PolyU’s Department of Electrical Engineering leveraged his team’s 15 years of research in optical fibres technologies to develop the world’s first integrated optical fibre-based railway monitoring system. This innovative system monitors the real-time conditions of tracks, train cars and bogies through sensors, and picks up any excessive and abnormal vibrations on a rail track in order to identify potential faults. Prof. Tam’s railway monitoring system has been installed in the metro systems in Hong Kong and Singapore, making journeys smoother for 8.8 million passengers.

Prof. Tam’s integrated optical fibre-based railway monitoring system streamlines and improves railway maintenance, and is one of ten impactful PolyU projects to be awarded the “President’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Knowledge Transfer”.
