Ludwig II (25 August 1845 – 13 June 1886), called the Swan King or the Fairy Tale King, was King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death in 1886. He exercised his penchant for elaborate castles by building three architectural masterpieces: Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Neuschwanstein, the fanciful vision of a medieval fortress. The swan became his royal emblem, which is symbolically elevated by the Lohengrin Saga and immortalised as a design motif throughout Ludwig's castles.

Materials.

The blue lacquered barrel of the 4810 edition is inspired by the colour of the robe Ludwig wore in one of his most famous portraits. The cap has a swan feather guilloche pattern underneath the white lacquer. To match the blue and white, the details are champagne tone gold-coated. The champagne-tone gold coated crown on cap top symbolizes a detail of the monarchs royal seal. The nice detail of the red ring is a reference to his sash.

The solid gold skeleton overlay on the white lacquer of the 888 edition recalling paintings adorning the walls of the throne room at Neuschwanstein. The details are platinum-coated. The cap top is shaped as a crown and embedded with the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl. The blue detail of the blue ring took its inspiration by the colour of Ludwig’s robe.

Features.

Shape of the clips symbolizes a swan’s neck and head, the clip of the 888 edition is not shiny, and therefore it gets some extra attraction. The swan is a reference to the fabulous character of the knight Lohengrin, riding a boat carried by a swan to bring justice to his lover – the pure Elsa. This story is told by Wagner in his eponymous opera.
The cap ring on both the editions is engraved with the code ‘’WWV75’’ in reference to the code assigned to the opera ‘’Lohengrin’’ in the catalogue of Wagner’s works. The additional quote is from Ludwig II himself and it says: Es ist notwendig, sich Paradies zu schaffen’’, which translates to ‘’You’ve got to create your own paradise’’. The synthetic red stone on the cap ring stands for his uniform.
