Developed as a way of determining which jobs would be more motivating than others, the Job Characteristics Model of Motivation is used to help businesses pinpoint what elements are lacking in the jobs that they offer.

The five elements of the Job Characteristics Model of Motivation include: skill variety, task identify, task significance, autonomy, and feedback. Jobs that possess all--or at least of majority--of these elements typically provide more interesting and satisfying work, which leads to greater performance on the job.
