12:35PM: My first NY&AR catch of the year at the Ocean Ave crossing in Ronkonkoma, NY on the Mainline with NY&AR Ex LIRR MP15AC 159 leading with its Nathan P3 horn, NY&AR Ex LIRR GP38-2 268 in the middle and NY&AR MP15AC 151 all pulling these 33 cars eastbound to customers out east on the Ronkonkoma-Greenport section of the Mainline. These locomotives at nearly 50 years of age are still working great and hard and are well maintained by the NY&AR. That shows you guys that old stuff is built to last. Out of 28 LIRR GP38-2s that were bought by the LIRR in 1976-77 for passenger service, only 4 of the GP38s remain in Long Island. NY&AR has the last 4 which include 261 with its 1980 K5LA horn with 2 of the bells removed, 268 (featured in this video) with its Prime 990, 270 with its 1980 bore K5LA, and 271 that had an RS3L horn installed sometime in 2004-05 replacing its modified K5LA that got knocked off by a tree branch from what I read. Because of that, GP38-2s as of 1/27/2026 have now officially been in service in Long Island for 50 years! The 261, 268, 270 and 271 have just turned 50 years old. These are some of the longest lasting locomotives in years in service that this railroad has ever seen
