2024 Elizabeth W. Jones Award: Jef Boeke, Build-a-Genome

Build-a-Genome, a course started in 2007 at Johns Hopkins University, directly engages undergraduate students in a worldwide collaborative project to build the first synthetic eukaryotic designer genome Yeast2.0. In this seminar, 2024 Elizabeth W. Jones Award for Excellence in Education recipient Jef Boeke, who is receiving this award on behalf of Build-a-Genome, described how the course teaches students fundamental principles of genetics and how to perform, interpret, and troubleshoot an experiment when the outcome is unknown. Additionally, he touched on the history of the course and the resultant Network of Build-a-Genome courses, how it has affected students and instructions, and the course’s impact on the overarching International Sc2.0 project.
