The opening ceremony of the URBAN OCTOBER 2024 at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH took place on October 1st 2024.

Dr. Heike Litzinger, Head of Division 423 for Energy, Urban Development, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMZ) introduced the strategic relevance of sustainable urban development in German development cooperation.

The strategic embedding of inclusion in urban development in German development cooperation was followed by a visualisation of how to practically implement inclusion aspects in architecture: Anna Heringer gave an insight into one of her projects in Bangladesh. Anna Heringer is a German architect who is considered a pioneer of sustainable building. She has realized projects worldwide with local craftsmen using traditional building forms and materials such as clay. She also holds an UNESCO chair.

Finally, Martina Liebermann, programme manager for the GIZ Section Cities, set the impressions gained in relation to the work of GIZ in the field of sustainable urban development, followed by an outlook on the events and topics covered during GIZ Urban October 2024.
