The Typing of the Dead (Dreamcast) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Sega's 2001 survival horror/touch-typing game for the Sega Dreamcast, The Typing of the Dead.

Played through the arcade mode with the default options.

This was one of my absolute favorite games when it came out on the Dreamcast. I bought it, packaged with the keyboard, the day it came out, and I'm shocked that we never wore that keyboard out.

Anyways, for anyone that isn't familiar with Sega's Typing of the Dead series, it is an offshoot of the House of the Dead series. This game, the first installment, is based entirely on The House of the Dead 2.

It keeps all of the original arcade game's assets, levels, and events intact, but instead of giving you guns, the game hands you a keyboard to take care of the zombie outbreak in Venice. The game throws up phrases attached to each enemy and item you can interact with - by typing these phrases quickly and accurately, you can kill the bad guys, pick up the items, and interact with anything that might need interacting with.

The Typing of the Dead is hilariously bizarre, and far more fun that it might sound in a description. It amps ups the already high campiness of the original considerably, and just piles on more - I still laugh when I see the agents running around armed with keyboards hooked up to Dreamcasts (that remind me of Proton Packs) strapped on their backs.

Believe it or not, The Typing of the Dead was originally released as an arcade game. And it was a incredibly success one. Whouda thunk it? But then again, salarymen are a staple of Japanese arcades, so maybe it resonated with guys itching to show off their clerical skills while killing zombies?

The designers also had a helluva sense of humor. Some of these phrases the game has you type are comic gold.

This game was followed up by two direct sequels: The Typing of the Dead 2, which was based on The House of the Dead 3, and The Typing of the Dead Overkill, based on - you guessed it - The House of the Dead Overkill. They're all great, but the first one has to be my favorite.

If you like incredibly odd novelties, you might also get a kick out of English of the Dead - it was an English-tutor game released only in Japan for the DS, and is also based entirely on The House of the Dead 2.
