Well in advance of running a portfolio you must first plan for it. In order to effectively manage the capital spend for your company you must create what I like to call a portfolio roadmap. There is a great deal of effort in designing a portfolio roadmap yet if you ignore this step it will be impossible to know if you are achieving the expected results of the portfolio of work. Planning for a portfolio is just like planning for a project and we all know what happens with projects are poorly planned.

It is important to consider that this stage of the portfolio process is actually a project. Your portfolio’s creation will be unique given that you probably will not have one in place or will need to modify the existing one. As well, although the roadmap may be in existence for many years, its actual creation is a project with the Roadmap portfolio as the end product. This discussion will walk you through the steps to build a portfolio roadmap.
