• The States and Union Territories have been organized into Districts.

• The principal unit of administration in India is the district under a
Collector.

II. Organization of health services – at District level

Thus. District Health Organization is headed by Chief Medical
Officer of Health [CMOH], who is ‘Director of Health Services’
at district.
• CMOH is Assisted by One or Two Deputy CMOH.
• Assisted by
District Family Welfare Officer [ DFWO],
District Health Officer [DHO],
District Medical Officer [DMO]
D.H.O is in-charge of all health administration and all National Health Programmes implemented in the district except Family
Welfare Programme.
- D.F.W.O & C.H.O is in-charge of ‘Family Welfare Programme’.

- District Medical Officer is in-charge of ‘medical care’ provision through
the various medical institutions except Primary Health
Centres
- Both D.H.O and D.F.W.O have control over Primary Health Centre.

• The recent working group on Health for all by 2000AD, recommended that the district hospitals should be converted into District Health Centers, each center monitoring of all preventive promotive and curative services of one million population .
