Ciaglia Technique: A Method for Recycling Soap Scraps and Shreds

Описание к видео Ciaglia Technique: A Method for Recycling Soap Scraps and Shreds

Welcome back to another #soapchallengeclub soap making video! This month's challenge was all about reusing/recycling soap scraps. There are a number of way this can be done, from rebatching, to making a confetti soap, to this new method called the "ciaglia method". This method is named after the Italian soapmaker Fabio Ciaglia who started it.

The Ciaglia method is a little different from your normal confetti soap. To make a confetti soap you generally prepare your oils and lye as normal, mix them together, bring them to trace, then you add your soap shreds. The Ciaglia method has you adding the soap shreds to the oils BEFORE you mix in your lye. It creates a really lovely fine speckled look in the finish bar that is very different from the confetti method.

A few Tips I learned along the way:
1. The larger the batch the longer you will need to stick blend with this recipe. (This won't necessarily hold true with other recipes).
2. Adding some Titanium Dioxide to the batch will help the batch trace a little faster.
3. The drier the soap the shreds the easier I found it was to get them really finely grated. However, you can use fresh shaved soap. I tried both and the freshly grated soap still worked.
4. After stick blending it if it looks shinny on top then you probably want to stick blend it a little more. I found that a shinny/glossy top was a clue that it was a false trace and the oils and lye had not fully mixed together.
