Twist Control Grinding: Get your gears out of or into a twist!

This animation shows what twist, also called bias, means in regards to gear tooth flanks. It also illustrates how the Reishauer gear grinding process can eliminate and modify twist on the tooth flanks in a controlled manner with a high level of user-friendliness.

All methods of gear grinding produce some geometrical deformations, the so-called gear twist. This twist is generally undesired. However, deliberate counter-twist may be desired to offset the natural twist of the meshing gear. Reishauer Twist Control Grinding (TCG) can modify the contact surface of meshing gears in a controlled and deliberate fashion. This gives gear designers a high degree of freedom to create new gear geometries that lead to more efficient transmissions

TCG means that the forces acting on the bearing surfaces can be ideally distributed, resulting in higher power density and increased longevity of gears. Higher power density, for example, translates into smaller gears, and by extension, into a weight reduction of the transmission itself, which contributes to better fuel economy. The ease of use of the machine’s TCG capability converts theses optimized features into an easy to set up and efficient manufacturing process.
