Olan is a part of Traditional Kerala Cuisine / Traditional Kerala Recipes. Olan in Malayalam cuisine is a subtle flavored dish made with a mix of vegetables like pumpkin, ash gourd, taro root and also with some black eyed Peas. It is a part of the traditional Onam Sadya Recipes / Vishu Sadya Recipes / any Kerala Festival Recipes. Olan in Tamil Nadu has gained prominence over the years and it has become a part of festival recipes or marriage / wedding recipes. It is cooked using thin coconut milk and then topped with thick coconut milk and coconut oil.  Hence, the coconut flavour will be evident in this. We add raw green chillis, curry leaves as such and we don't grind them. So Olan is all about combination of flavours which come from vegetables, chillis and the coconut.

It tastes great with plan rice and also with sambar rice. Here I have made with just the yellow pumpkin and hence it is called Pumpkin Olan / Parangikai Olan. As said earlier, you can use a combination of vegetables.  Have a look at the recipe card.
