3 Ultra-Curved Cloudhammer Katanas Review - Deep Sori Japanese Swords Made of Japanese Super Steel

Many thanks to John Kang of ‪@rvakatana‬ for sending three katana of different degree of sori (curvature from the base to the tip of the blade on nihonto). I have done some extensive testing with these three swords, and examined their handling, durability, and fit and finish.

You can see the one with the navy blue leather ito has the greatest degree of sori but more evenly distributed. The one with the black ito has a more differentially distributed sori, with the more pronounced curvature in the bottom 1/3 of the blade and the transition to the tang, resulting in a deeply curved grip, mostly found on koto ("古刀/old saber") period of Japanese swords starting from the late Heian period/平安時代末期. The one with the brown leather ito has a more standard sori without any bo-hi (fuller), but standing next to a Tang Dynasty Chinese dao (also prevalent in Nara period/奈良時代 and early Heian period/平安時代前半は of Japan), it can still be observed to have a noticeable sori. In this video, we will take a look at the evolution of Japanese swords' profiles and geometries to evaluate the historicity of these three swords.
