The Darkness That Comes Before by R. Scott Bakker is the first entry in the Prince of Nothing trilogy and the first entry in Bakker's series called the Second Apocalypse. The Darkness That Comes Before is R. Scott's Bakker's beginning in taking a strong hold within the grim dark sub genre of fantasy and for good reason. Prince of Nothing has been highly recommended to me and I am very happy I've read it. The Darkness That Comes Before is beautifully written and full of both life and death.
