Why was Yoda unable to defeat Darth Sidious?

As he entered the Emperor’s office at the conclusion of Revenge of the Sith, Yoda was well aware of the magnitude of the coming fight. He was confident his 900 years of experience, Force abilities and lightsaber training would allow him to defeat the Sith.

In the novelization, Yoda quickly learns the Sith have evolved and that his victory is no longer assured - it might even be impossible.

Despite being the most powerful Jedi Master of his time, Yoda recognized that he lacked the skills to destroy Sidious. Expecting to encounter the Sith from a thousand years before, he instead confronted a highly advanced Sith.

Accepting that no amount of Force abilities or lightsaber skill would be enough to defeat Sidious, Yoda determined the best course of action was to retreat and take this knowledge with him until a new way to oppose the Sith might be discovered in the future.
