Nellaidhoo's Million Rufiyaa Industry | Saajin aa eku Uthurun Dhekunah

Nellaidhoo is a small inhabited island in Haa Dhaal atoll, nestled in the northern side of Maldives. Here are three distinct aspects I noticed upon visiting the island.

Nellaidhoo has a lucrative sea cucumber fishing industry and the majority of the youth makes a living out of it. It is estimated that during peak season, over MVR 1 million is collectively generated each month in revenue by many different groups of 5-7 people. There are dozens of dinghies purchased by the youth and designated just for this trade.

In addition, Nellaidhoo was once an island with a beautifully formed beach on at least one side, depending on the season and currents. However, due to human actions and recent developments of the harbor area, the circulation of sand around the island came to a halt and the island's erosion slowly started gaining momentum. This continued until measures were taken to minimize erosion by constructing a rock boulder sea wall, protecting a significant area surrounding the island. This did not stop the erosion completely, as the unprotected areas experienced increased erosion and advancement of the beach seaward. Ultimately, this is a pressing concern and shows that proper research needs to be done prior to constructing harbors, in order to minimize the impact on the island's environment.

Moreover, Nellaidhoo is home to an exceptionally industrious community. Almost every individual of the working population is actively making a living within this island community. The people of Nellaidhoo take pride in calling this island their home, where more than 80% of the registered population reside. Majority of the population's youth reside on the island, as they have found themselves lucrative means to make money, such as sea cucumber fishing. In addition to this, the hard-working women on the island are actively engaged in various forms of work, further contributing to the island's substantial infrastructure development.
