Here is an old traditional song called “Mama Don't Allow” in an arrangement by JJ Cale that mentions drugs. He arranged the "old country barn burner" and recorded it live in Nashville for his own 1980 album Shades. It became a great concert opener for Cale as each band member entered the stage while JJ sang the verse that mentioned Mama didn't allow the playing of their instrument. They included Jimmy Karstein on drums, Bill Raffensperger on bass, Christine Lakeland on guitar and Rocky Frisco on piano. The drug reference was Mama not allowing reefer smoking, but Cale didn't care and allowed it anyhow!
Besides singing, Cale played the electric rhythm guitar and the second guitar solo. The first and third guitar solos were played by Reggie Young. Also on a rhythm guitar was Johnny Christopher. On bass was Tommy Cogbill with Kenneth Buttrey on drums. The pianist was David Briggs.
Cale's Shades had several ace musicians on it, like James Burton, Hal Blaine, Jim Keltner, Carol Kaye, Tommy Tedesco, Glen Hardin, Russ Kunkel, and one of the recording engineers was Steve Ripley of The Tractors. Many of Cale's Tulsa buddies contributed to the sessions, including Jimmy Karstein, Bill Boatman, Larry Bell, and his other half... Christine Lakeland. Leon Russell appeared on the album too, playing piano on "What Do You Expect."
Also included her is the 1963 rendition of "Mama Don't Allow" by The famous folk group The Rooftop Singers, who had a Number One hit that year with "Walk Right In." (Leon played on a few covers of that song, including versions by The Moments and The Sidewalk Swingers). Also included is the 1961 version of "Mama Don't Allow" by Barbara Dane (with her album including Billy Strange on guitar, Raymond Johnson on piano, Earl Palmer and Jesse Sailes on drums and percussion).
