'The Blackest Crow' is a very old song. Like 'Katie Cruel' the tune is older than the words - and probably came to the New World with the early settlers. Many of my (Scottish) ancestors settled in Appalachia and the Ozarks: dulcimer country.

The tune is modal and really doesn't work with modern harmony, hence you hear it played on fiddle - and banjo in the right sort of tuning. I'm playing a traditionally-intonated dulcimer. Two-note chords are possible, but it sings most sweetly over the open drones.
