Getting the clutch basket/primary gear assembly apart to replace the cush springs can be a challenge if you’ve not done it before. I suspect getting the new springs in and the retainer plate back on is always challenging regardless of how many times you’ve done it. With basic tools and some patience you can replace the cush (an odd word for sure) springs and make your clutch basket/primary gear assembly a serviceable unit.

Re-phasing the crankshaft in an XS650 engine is a proven performance and reliability modification that should also help the cush springs to live better.
