This is a detailed video of my procedure for repairing the parking brake lever on my 1994 VW Jetta GLX MK3. The ratcheting mechanism wore out after 20 years and it would not hold any more. I discovered that the tip of the pawl had worn away as were the mating teeth on the mechanism. I used a Dremel rotary tool to grind a new point on the pawl and I reversed the insert that had the teeth on it. It was an easy fix and cost me nothing.
