15-month observational study using subcutaneous EEG to monitor seizures in patients with epilepsy

Pedro Viana, MD, PhD(c), King's College London, London, UK, discusses a 15-month observational study in which 10 patients with treatment-resistant epilepsy were implanted with a subcutaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) device to monitor seizures. The study revealed that the device recorded significantly more seizures than patient-reported diaries, highlighting the potential of more objective seizure detection. Dr Viana emphasizes the need for larger studies to validate these findings, highlighting an ongoing multicenter trial in the UK involving 33 patients.
