HARROW & WEALDSTONE - 6TH AUGUST 2025 - 1ST VISIT

Harrow & Wealdstone station was originally opened in 1837 by the London and Birmingham Railway as "Harrow," at a time when the surrounding area was mostly rural. The station was renamed Harrow & Wealdstone in 1897 to reflect the growing community of Wealdstone. In 1917, London Underground's Bakerloo line services were extended to the station, sharing tracks with the main line. The station was the site of the devastating Harrow and Wealdstone rail crash in 1952, which remains one of the worst peacetime railway disasters in British history. Today, the station serves London Underground, London Overground, and National Rail services, and the original station buildings from 1912 are now Grade II listed.

Harrow & Wealdstone station is a key interchange in London Travelcard Zone 5, featuring a total of six platforms. Platforms 1 and 2 serve the London Underground Bakerloo line and London Overground's Lioness line. Platforms 3 and 4 are the fast lines for the West Coast Main Line, typically used by non-stopping long-distance trains from operators such as Avanti West Coast. Platforms 5 and 6 are for stopping main line services, accommodating London Northwestern Railway and Southern trains heading to destinations like London Euston, Milton Keynes Central, and East Croydon. This multi-platform layout efficiently separates the various local, regional, and long-distance services that pass through the station.

If you ask me, I think that Harrow & Wealdstone is a decent place to trainspot. This is because there are a great variety of trains. However, I almost got stopped by a member of staff. Thankfully, it was just a brief moment of caution, and I was able to continue my trainspotting as normal. Despite that minor interruption, I still had a successful day.

Fun Fact: The main station building at Harrow & Wealdstone is a Grade II listed building, notable for its grand "Wrennaissance" architectural style. It was rebuilt in 1912 by the London and North Western Railway and is a rare example of this ornate style for a station building, making it stand out from most other stations of its era.
