This video shows how to tie a Texas style rein to a hackamore. This type of rein is not considered a mecate because there is no lead rope or get down rope.

A Hackamore is a great piece of equipment to ride your horse with if you want to ride without putting any pressure the horses mouth. The heel knot and nose band balance a hackamore. When the reins are shortened, as in a stop or turn, the heel knot rises. As soon as the pull on the reins is released, the heel knot drops which releases the pressure of the noseband on the nose. This works the same way whether you're pulling each rein individually for a stop or pulling one rein to turn.

There are a wide variety of hackamores available from those made with soft rope to be very mild on the nose and give a mild signal to those made with stiffer rope with or without braided rawhide on the noseband for a stronger signal.

Hackamores can be used for training young horses, trail riding, loping in a warm up pen, pleasure riding, roping and just about any other type of riding.
