On this episode of FM, I'll walk you through the accessory belt tensioner test and replacement procedure on my LEXUS GS400. The test and replacement is similar across many other models. However, be sure to consult your specific FSM for your vehicle's procedure.

HISTORY
This resolved my tensioner issue that occurred when installing my XAT Racing Pulley Kit (episode is available here:    • XAT Racing Aluminum Pulleys (Installa...  ). XAT decided to solve my tensioner fitment issue by sending me a new 3UZ tensioner with their 3UZ pulley installed for use on my 1UZ VVT-i.

Replacement of the tensioner is a good preventative maintenance item as well, so even if the tests indicate yours is ok, it might be worth replacing it as a preventative measure. Typically we don't see tensioners as the cause for a thrown belt though; usually the bearing goes first and they get noisy.

PARTS
Tensioner: there are many options out there; select what's best for you. OEM is always a good option, but expensive.
Belt: Bando PN 6PK2240 has worked well for me.
