The three black cockatoo species, native only to the southwest of Western Australia are all under threat. The two white-tailed black cockatoos, known as Carnaby’s and Baudin's, are both listed as endangered and the Forrest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is listed as Vulnerable.

While Carnaby’s Cockatoo is the most well known of the two white tails, the Baudin’s is more endangered, with lower numbers of birds existing in the wild.

I can’t imagine life in Western Australia without these charismatic birds gracing our skies; find out how people across the south-west of Western Australia are helping to protect these birds and how you can too.

The Great Cocky Count is an annual survey of the birds, run by Bird Life Australia. It is one of the largest Citizen Science projects in Australia and aims to get a better understanding of the birds to help conserve their habitat and save them from potential extinction.

In 2021 I participated in the evening survey; find out what happened in this video. The Great Cocky Count is held each year on an evening in Autumn, between late March and mid-April and new volunteers are always welcome across the south west.
