On the face of it, building façades exist simply to provide a barrier to protect occupants from outside weather elements, helping to keep the inside space at a comfortable temperature and providing daylight. However, from an energy and environmental design perspective, façades can be highly complex systems. Today’s design standards require that they optimise and balance a wide range of considerations including daylight, shading, acoustics, solar gains, thermal insulation, ventilation, and even electricity generation.
