Toyota HiLux 48V hybrid 2024 review: Rogue pick-up's fuel consumption lowered with new V-Active tech

The 2024 Toyota HiLux mid-size ute is taking a step into the electrified future. No, it hasn't adopted a 'full' hybrid system like most other Toyota models. Instead, it's debuted 48V mild-hybrid technology, which the Japanese brand calls V-Active. So, fuel consumption is lowered, but not by as much as you may expect.

Under the bonnet, the HiLux V-Active is powered by the series' familiar 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, which continues to produce 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque, despite the addition of mild hybridisation. Rather, the headline number is the 10 per cent improvement to fuel efficiency.

But, of course, there's more to the HiLux V-Active story than just how much diesel it does or doesn't use. In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft spends a week with the high-spec Rogue 4x4 dual-cab pick-up to find out if the hybridisation has gone far enough.
