ERNESTO NETO - Ultimatum

Ernesto Saboia de Albuquerque Neto, better known as Ernesto Neto is a Brazilian artist born in 1964 in Rio de Janeiro. Famous for his conceptual sculptures and installations, he also presents paintings in his personal exhibition, Ultimatum, presented at the Max Hetzler Paris gallery from March 12 to April 16, 2022.

Ultimatum, through an important installation as well as other works of different formats, warns of the short time that humanity has left to become aware of the limitless consumption of the resources of our Planet.

Ernesto Neto confronts us with our responsibilities and reminds us that we are on borrowed time. Man, who since the rebirth places the intellect above the body, nevertheless depends on the same organic entity as all living beings, animals and plants. A tree trunk located in the center of the installation symbolizes the deforestation of the Amazon, whose exports of raw wood have increased sixfold over the past 5 years.

Ernesto Neto wishes to rekindle the link that man has gradually broken with the Earth and invites him to meditate, to meditate to the sound of percussion, maracas and a ceremonial song. It reminds us of the mixed origins of Brazilians who mix indigenous and African cultures.

“Who consumes the Amazon? Who buys the soybeans, the gold and the meat?”. Ernesto Neto underlines with this quote, the serious problems of today, of this critical situation in which we find ourselves, global warming being a subject that has preoccupied him for a long time.

Ernesto Neto, one of the leaders of international contemporary art, resumes with this exhibition, his work developed since the 90s, by which he encourages experimentation, in particular olfactory. He thus regularly incorporates aromatic herbs, seeds but also moss, cotton, shells, sand, comparable to the human body, which by their ephemeral and vulnerable nature, evoke the passage of time and the fragility of the world.

The artist sets up as a model the protection provided by the natives who, in their ancestral rituals, have always connected humans and the environment, in an inseparable and harmonious way. Like these guardians of the Earth, Ernesto Neto encourages the visitor to act by reconnecting with Nature in a dynamic and updated relationship with the reality of the contemporary world.
