In October 2003, Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 No. 261 returned to home rails - the former Milwaukee Road between Minneapolis and La Crosse, Wisc. - for a pair of excursions sponsored by the Friends of 261 and Amtrak. This was the only outing for 261 in 2003, and the big Northern puts on an impressive show running along the Mississippi River. We catch No. 261 at Hastings, Maple Springs, River Junction, Lake City, and many other notable locations where the Milwaukee Road's famous streamlined Hiawatha passenger train once operated. This was the first steam locomotive to traverse the former Milwaukee Road's line (now Canadian Pacific's River Subdivision) since 1955.
