Stuart VE9CF recently conducted a successful activation of VEFF-0254 and CA-0254, Killbear Provincial Park, as part of the World Wide Flora & Fauna (WWFF) and Parks On The Air (POTA) programs. Located near Parry Sound, Ontario, on the shores of Georgian Bay, Killbear Provincial Park provided an excellent backdrop for this amateur radio adventure.
The day started with a light drizzle, initially keeping many visitors away, creating ideal conditions for Stuart's activation. He made an impressive 200+ QSOs (contacts) using 15m, 17m, 20m, and 40m SSB bands. Stuart's setup included an EFHW (End-Fed Half-Wave) antenna positioned horizontally at 20 feet, demonstrating the effectiveness of a relatively simple portable configuration.
Killbear Provincial Park is renowned for its natural beauty and is often considered one of the best provincial parks in Ontario. Its location on Georgian Bay offers stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, making it an attractive destination for amateur radio operators and nature enthusiasts.
As the day progressed and the sun emerged, the park began to fill with cottage-goers and day visitors eager to enjoy the park's amenities. This influx of people highlights the transformative power of nature that Killbear Provincial Park offers, drawing individuals to disconnect from their daily routines and immerse themselves in the outdoors.
Stuart's activation at Killbear is part of a more extensive trip to the VE3 land (Ontario), where he has conducted various POTA, WWFF, and Lighthouse activations. These activities promote amateur radio and raise awareness about the beautiful parks and natural areas across Canada.
Numerous resources, including video demonstrations and explanations of WWFF and POTA activations, are available for those interested in learning more about these programs. These activities combine the technical aspects of amateur radio with the joy of exploring nature, creating a unique and rewarding experience for participants.
Stuart's successful activation at Killbear Provincial Park inspires other amateur radio operators and showcases the potential for combining outdoor adventures with radio communications. It also highlights the beauty and appeal of Ontario's provincial parks, encouraging more people to explore and appreciate these natural treasures.
