泉州中山路始建于上世纪20年代初，1901年泉州工务局成立，开始从城南新桥头一带拆卸旧城，辟为马路，后因遭到商民反对只好中断。不久工务局易名市政局，新任者翟沾本意让新辟马路破城而入，后碍于社会阻力，只得循着城墙，使马路从南门入城，拆去天后宫西廊，衔接旧街北上，路面略作拓宽。

Zhongshan Road in Quanzhou was first built in the early 1920s. In 1901, the Quanzhou Public Works Bureau was established and began to dismantle the old city from the Xinqiaotou area in the south of the city and turn it into a road. Later, due to opposition from businessmen and people, it had to be interrupted. Soon after, the Public Works Bureau was renamed the Municipal Bureau. The new incumbent, Zhai Zhan, originally intended to allow the newly built road to break into the city, but due to social resistance, he had to follow the city wall and make the road enter the city from the south gate, demolish the west corridor of Tianhou Temple and connect it with the old street. Going north, the road is slightly widened.
