How to Pronounce English Vowel Sounds 🗣

One of the most common reasons for misunderstandings when we speak in English is the wrong pronunciation of vowel sounds. This confusion is very common! And it is so common because we are not familiar enough with the pronunciation of English vowel sounds, which are very often totally different from the vowel sounds in your own language.

Sometimes, this confusion might not be such a big deal because the context makes it quite clear what we intend to say. Other times, however, the context may not be that clarifying … and it is then that we have a little problem!!

In English there are 5 vowels: A E I O U which create all these different vowel sounds: /iː/ /uː/ /ɔː/ /ɜː/ /ɑː/ /ɪ/ /ʊ/ /ɒ/ /ə/ /e/ /æ/ /ʌ/ Some vowel sounds are long and some vowel sounds are short.

The symbols you just saw belong to the IPA which is the International Phonetic Alphabet. I use them all the time with my students and they are really useful because when you feel unsure about how a word should be pronounced, you can just look it up in a dictionary and you’ll see its phonetic transcription containing all the sounds that compose it. Look at them and you’ll know that word’s pronunciation!!!
