This video is Part Three of a series that explores the existing suburban and regional lines of Metropolitan Perth and Regional Western Australia. Perth's railway network grew throughout the state from the 1870's. The first line was a 12 mile timber line opened in 1871, called the Ballaarat Tramline it was constructed by the Western Australian Timber Company. The first government railway between Northampton and Geraldton opened in 1879. The early railways were generally built to the 3' 6" narrow gauge which is still the standard for all existing and new suburban lines.

Transperth is the name given to all Perth's local public transport services, including trains, buses, and ferries. A more recent development is Metrolink, with new lines, revamped/new stations, extensions to existing lines, road/rail crossing mitigation, new rolling stock construction, transport hubs and bus/ rail interchanges planned and currently under construction, with a new rail airport link due to open in 2021.

The subject of this video is the Armadale to Perth line. The line starts near to the East Perth railway station (now Claisebrook) and proceeds to cross the Swan River close to Burswood Island, crossing the river north of the Causeway it then passes the Optus Stadium and heads toward the Perth Stadium Station (2018). Just before the new stadium station was the the site of the old Goodwood Station (later Belmont Park) which served the adjacent racecourse. In the past a signal box here controlled traffic across the single track original timber bridge. After Burswood the line continues through the Victoria Park Estate. The line runs south through the suburbs more or less adjacent to the Perth - Albany Highway, and on the western side of the Darling escarpment. The highway crosses to the right of the railway between Maddington and Gosnells, at this point once stood Stokely Station its platforms staggered either side of the road.

After reaching Armadale the original line continued south to Pinjarra, although Armadale is the terminus for the Transperth suburban services (an extension to Byford is planned for 2021) it is possible to travel to Pinjarra and beyond to Bunbury by the twice daily Australind regional service.

The original stations in 1889 were Perth, Welshpool, Kelmscott and Armadale. Cannington, although operational in 1889, was opened in 1893.
