Perth's railway network grew throughout the state from the 1870's. The first line was a 12 mile timber line opened in 1871, called the Ballaarat Tramline it was constructed by the Western Australian Timber Company. The first government railway between Northampton and Geraldton opened in 1879. The early railways were generally built to the 3' 6" narrow gauge which is still the standard for all existing and new suburban lines.

Transperth is the name given to all Perth's local public transport services, including trains, buses, and ferries. A more recent development is Metrolink, with new lines, revamped/new stations, extensions to existing lines, road/rail crossing mitigation, new rolling stock construction, transport hubs and bus/ rail interchanges planned and currently under construction, with a new rail airport link due to open in 2021.

This video is part one of a series that will catalogue the existing suburban and regional lines. In part one the subject is the Eastern Railway which opened in 1881, now known as the Perth - Fremantle line. Although services did extend south to Kwinana passenger trains beyond Fremantle were withdrawn in the 1960's. This video follows the line from the demolished station site at the Esplanade, one of three stations built for special trains to provide a service for visitors and locals to the America's Cup, after Esplanade we continue back up the line to Fremantle Station. The station at Fremantle is 'new' and dates from 1907, it replaced the original 1881 Cliff Street station. Some stations along the line have been in situ since the line opened, others have opened when demand arose in developing suburbs along the line, some stations have been relocated, some have disappeared completely, and some have had a welcome name change notably Claremont which had the most unassuming name of Butler's Swamp when it opened in 1881.

Our journey terminates at Perth station, the original station building from 1881, built as part of the Eastern Railway is retained but the rest would be unrecognizable to the founding fathers. The Eastern Railway continued onto Guildford, but that now belongs to the Perth - Midland line (Part two). At its zenith Perth station was the hub for daily suburban and regional services including 63 weekly sleeper services.
