In the 1950s Athearn was interested in getting into the market of small four wheel locomotives. The only other manufacturer at the time making such a thing was Penn Line so in order to get a leg up they sold their models for half of what Penn Line did.

These locomotives included their new HI-F drive which allowed them to go around 250 scale mph. These would prove to be a very successful locomotive and were sold with several paint schemes over the years.
