Why is the idol of Lord Jagannath incomplete?
According to mythological beliefs, it is said that King Indradyumna was building a temple of Lord Jagannath in Puri. He entrusted the task of making the idol of Lord Jagannath to Dev Shilpi Vishwakarma. Before making the idol, Vishwakarma ji placed a condition in front of King Indradyumna that he would close the door and make the idol and no one would enter inside until the idols were made. He also said that if the door opened earlier for any reason then he would stop making the idol.
The king accepted the condition of Lord Vishwakarma and the construction work of the idol started behind closed doors, but King Indradyumna wanted to know whether the idol was being constructed or not. To know this, the king used to stand outside the door every day and listen to the sound of the idol being made. One day when the king did not hear any sound from inside, he thought that Vishwakarma had left his work. After this the king opened the door.
