Whittingham Hospital Railway aka ‘The Nurses’ special’ and even ‘Sylum Billy.

Описание к видео Whittingham Hospital Railway aka ‘The Nurses’ special’ and even ‘Sylum Billy.

A pictorial record of one of Britian's quirkiest railways. Passengers travelled free, no station staff - just two engine crews ran the railway. No signals, no signal men or women. It opened in 1889 and closed in 1957. Only two miles long, the line ran from Grimsargh (north of Preston) to Whittingham Asylum in Lancashire.
The fame of the peculiar Whittingham Hospital line spread far beyond Lancashire, even to the USA, where the San Francisco Examiner in its ‘Believe it or not’ feature by Mr Ripley carried a picture of ‘The no-fare train’ and declared: ‘You can travel 50 miles a day for nothing on the Grimsargh-Whittingham line, England'
