Immersion in Writing Workshop: Using a Checklist

We all know the importance of immersing our students- especially when we are changing genres/text types and the students have been writing in one area of text for a long period of time. Immersion happens the week before you introduce the genre/text type with read alouds, shared writing, and exemplar pieces.

The kindergarten class is starting their opinion writing unit and I'm introducing how the checklist is used and the purpose of using one. The many complaints I hear from teachers and even with my own students is that the checklist turns into something that the students literally just "check" off and don't take the time to check their pieces to make sure they've included everything in their piece.
