Maybe it's the messaging we receive, but it's so easy to fall into the trap and believe that our children, particularly our young children are giving us a hard time.

A one-year-old doesn't have the capacity to understand when they are or aren't doing what we want (which in reality is often synonymous with what is convenient for us).

A two-year-old isn't saying no to just be difficult or defiant. They're still learning everything about the world, particularly through the use of language, which is brand new to them. And they are trying to figure out what they are "allowed" to do in this world and where the boundaries are.

So much of our frustration as parents can be managed better when we realize that our kids have no idea that the things we find challenging are creating frustration for others.
