Antique Chinese Apothecary Counter

This unique sideboard was originally intended as a shop counter for a Chinese apothecary. The lower area would store larger bottles and miscellaneous items, while the six upper drawers housed the herbs and plants utilized in Chinese medicine. Each drawer is divided into six labeled sections to identify its contents. Despite their aged appearance, the original labels remain clearly legible and harmonize with the surrounding dark lacquer finish.

Crafted from elm wood with sturdy frames and a thick top surface, this sideboard once boasted a dark lacquer finish. Over time, the top has aged to reveal a stunning fusion of lighter elm and darker lacquer, showcasing its long history of use. As a unique and full-of-character piece, it serves perfectly as a sideboard with ample space for storing ornaments, crockery or perhaps even a record collection on its lower shelf.
