The Kuma Academy founded by DPP legislator Puma Shen teaches Taiwanese civilians how to prepare for a Chinese invasion. Recently it held an event where hordes of people held up placards to spell out “Defend Taiwan” from an aerial view. However, the academy admitted it used a drone equipped with an aerial camera made by Chinese consumer drone maker DJI, after this was outed by netizens. Kuma Academy then offered an apology on Facebook, saying it would humbly conduct a review. Let’s hear what everyone had to say.

This was a photography team outsourced by Kuma Academy. But even if it is a contracted team, we should pay special attention as to whether the contractor currently uses products with security risks. So we take accountability for our part and we will also conduct a review.

Lawmaker (KMT)
After this was discovered on Facebook, they changed their tune and said they would pay attention next time. Kuma Academy is very good at raising funds but once they were raised, they bought things from the mainland, and the money went to the mainland.

The image of thousands of people lining up to spell “defend Taiwan” in all caps, which moved many people, was captured by a drone with an aerial camera produced by China’s DJI. Experts have repeatedly warned of DJI’s security risks. Although some netizens lamented this issue was hard to avoid with aerial photography as DJI occupies as much as 80% of the commercial drone market, Kuma Academy is so strongly anti-China, that it’s inevitable that using a Chinese drone would attract criticism.
