Welcome to the new season of ŠumArt Talk!
In our first session, we’re thrilled to present "Echoes of Nubia: Mamoun Hussein’s Journey from Ancient Roots to Modern Expression." This insightful talk explores the inspiring journey of Sudanese artist Mamoun Hussein, whose life and work are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of art.
Mamoun, born and raised in Sudan, began his journey in art at the age of 10, inspired by his parents, both of whom are fine art graduates. His artistic expression is deeply rooted in the history, symbolism, and cultural legacy of Nubia and Sudan, which he skilfully channels into contemporary perspectives. Before diving fully into his creative path, Mamoun dedicated eight years to humanitarian work as a project officer with various UN agencies, experiences that profoundly enriched his perspective and continue to shape his art.
In Kenya, Mamoun founded the Nubian Art Gallery, a unique platform providing space and support for artists displaced by conflict. His decision to establish the gallery combines the humanitarian skills and insights gained through his career, offering artists a place to create, heal, and share their powerful stories. The Nubian Art Gallery is more than an art space; it’s a centre for peacebuilding, storytelling, and creative resilience, emphasising the vital role of cultural preservation in times of adversity.
Mamoun has also contributed to the scholarly discourse on art and heritage through his paper, "The Impact of Sudanese Heritage and Nubian Culture in Contemporary Art," which he will present at the Tokyo International Art Fair on November 29-30, 2024, as a representative of Nubian Art Gallery. This upcoming event marks another step in his mission to share the depth and richness of Sudanese heritage with a global audience, and he looks forward to presenting more exhibitions following his return.
Today's Art Talk, led by Sara Werkee, the Public Program Director and Liaison at the Scientific and Research Association ŠumArt, explores Mamoun’s journey from his cultural roots to his current vision of art as a vehicle for resilience, identity, and social healing. Together, they explore the interplay between tradition and modernity, the challenges and rewards of establishing a gallery for displaced artists, and the powerful role of heritage in contemporary art.
Thank you for being here with us as we delve into the remarkable story of Mamoun Hussein. We hope this Talk inspires you to reflect on the enduring power of art and the strength of the human spirit.
