This is a story about a machine that saved the American wilderness by poisoning the men who worked it.

In 1891, nine workers were shot dead in Morewood, Pennsylvania. They weren't just striking for better wages—they were fighting against a 2,000-degree beast that turned coal into the fuel of a superpower while turning their lungs into charcoal.

By the late 1800s, America faced an environmental collapse. To make iron, we were devouring our forests. The beehive coke oven was the "green" solution of its day—a brick dome that saved millions of acres of trees. But there was a price. The same chemistry that saved the forests created a cocktail of hydrogen cyanide and benzene that killed workers for over a century.
