Battle of Belonia

Many battles fought over the nine month of war reflected the bravery, skill, heroism and sacrifices of Bengali people. One among those was the Battle of Belonia bulge, the narrow strip surrounded by India on three sides. The first attack on the Pakistani position was launched by Mukti-bahini on 1 June. Despite massive counter attack the Pakistani Army failed in driving out the Freedom Fighters until they were withdrawn to the Indian territory. The Freedom Fighters continued to harass and attack the Pakistani Army causing significant casualty and damage. On October East Bengal Regiment under the command of Major Zafar Imam was formed with newly trained officers as well as the Muktifouz. In 5 November the FF’s crossed Muhuri river and attacked enemy positions. On the next day a railway trolley carrying a Pakistani Captain was hit. A Sabre jet was badly damaged by heavy machine; gun fire. With the help of the Indian Army Parshuram was liberated on 10 November. The Pakistani Captain 72 soldiers surrendered.
