STORYLINE:

Electoral officials announced on Tuesday that the son of the dictator who ruled Togo for nearly four decades has been elected to succeed his late father, prompting angry protests by opposition supporters.

Faure Gnassingbe won 60 percent of the votes in Sunday's violence-scarred balloting, or 1.3 (m) million votes, said electoral commission Chairwoman Kissem Tchangai Walla.

Main opposition candidate Bob Akitani took 38 per cent, or 841,000 votes, she told reporters.

"We are very satisfied with the results," said Komi Koassou, director of Faure Gnassingbe's campaign.

The whereabouts of Akitani, who went into hiding as voters went to polls on Sunday, saying he feared for his life, weren't known.

Gnassingbe and a senior figure from Akitani's party had agreed Monday in nearby Nigeria that whoever won would form a government of national unity.

Nigeria was among the West African nations that had intervened to ensure a democratic succession in Togo and now do not want to see their efforts destroyed by violence.

Togolese angered by the news of Gnassingbe's win began erecting flaming barricades in the streets of the capital, Lome, and throwing stones at passing vehicles.

Residents scurried behind closed doors as plumes of heavy black smoke billowed over the seaside city.

The electoral commission spokesperson said the results must be certified by Togo's constitutional court in coming weeks but are considered the final tally - although they don't include ballots cast at about 700 nationwide polling stations that were destroyed during election violence on Sunday.

Hundreds of opposition supporters rioted in the streets on Sunday, angry at reports the ruling party stole ballot boxes or stuffed them with votes for Gnassingbe.

Ahead of the result, shops remained closed due to fear of looting and violence.

One shop owner in Lome said that because his store was closed, he couldn't afford to eat.
