Orania South Africa Afrikaans Speaking Whites Only Town & Homeland

Описание к видео Orania South Africa Afrikaans Speaking Whites Only Town & Homeland

I visited Orania! A bustling town of just over 2000 permanent residents on the banks of the Orange River in the Northern Cape province, roughly in the very centre of South Africa. As an enclave of white Afrikaans speakers, it's also possibly the most controversial town in the country.

NB! I don't believe that segregation is a positive thing for humanity, although like the Amish for example, provided that they don't infringe on the rights of others, I'm of the opinion that there can be space in the world for those who prefer to live in their own communities. My video is intended to be neither positive or negative towards Orania, or the people that have made the personal choice to live there, it has no opinion, it's purely to show an interesting and unique piece of South Africa.

Orania was originally built in 1963 to house workers building irrigation canals from the Vanderkloof Dam, a few kilometres upstream on the Orange River. It was originally named Vluytjeskraal after the farm on which it was built, but renamed Orania a couple of years later. It was abandoned once construction was completed.

The town was purchased in 1990 by a group or Afrikaans families headed by Carel Boshoff, son in law of Hendrik Verwoerd, architect of the apartheid system for ZAR1.5 million. In 1991 the first families moved in and the town of Orania was reborn.

Orania now has a population of over 2000 people and it's growing. The town is privately owned by the Vluytjeskraal Share Block Company. Ownership of plots and houses is in the form of shares in the company, so there are no title deeds or private ownership in the truest sense.

There's a strong sense of identity evident even when visiting for a short time, it has it's own currency the Ora, pegged to the South African Rand, a radio station, and it's own flag. Only Afrikaans speakers are granted the right to residence, so while it's not officially "white only", it is so by default. There are 2 schools, shops, hotel, restaurants, library and a post office in town, being almost crime free, there is no permanent police presence.

It's a different place for sure, and one that wouldn't appeal to most people, but definitely unique and definitely worth a visit.

I’m Chris, video creator, outdoor lover, conservation minded overlanding & road trip fan. Now exploring Africa overland and sharing our adventures in video, photos and words. Kangela is aimed at those who want to experience overlanding & road tripping adventures, but who don’t care as much about the vehicle that gets them there, as they do about the journey itself and the destination.

I'm currently embarked on a 2 year long mission, Project #60460, to visit 60 of the most unique places in southern and east Africa to mark my 60th year on this, the only planet that we have. I'll be sharing the adventure with videos, community updates and stories. And along the way I will be highlighting the plight of 3 of Africa's big cats: the Lion, Leopard & Cheetah.
